The word Souvenir in French means both object and memory. Those of us who have grown up with someone who has experienced trauma, such as a veteran of war, or victim of violence, may inherit some of their souvenirs. Souvenirs may include memories and stories. They may be familiar, or they may be coming to light. They include our relationships; how these may have changed over time, as a spouse, a sibling, a child of a vet; a caregiver, a friend. We learn from these experiences, and we can grow from them. The information on this site looks at the related emotions, symptoms, and ways of healing. It includes definitions, stories, and rituals from various individuals and cultures. This site is for people who have lived with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)— whether as trauma survivors, or, caregivers, family and friends. It provides definitions and symptoms of PTSD, along with practical information concerning emotions and healing. Please note, this site is based on personal experiences, interviews, and published materials. It is a guide, though not an authority. For professional assistance please contact a health care providor, such as your local Vet's Center or the National Center for PTSD. Some of their materials are included on this site. This site was created by a daugher of a veteran, and contributions included are by people who have personally lived with PTSD, as survivors, family members, caregivers; as friends. |
