From “The Nature of the Chinese Character”

The Earth, T'u, encompasses all of nature. yet it is represented in the most minimal form in this abstract ideograph comtaining the character for 'ten', which in Chinese also means 'complete': earth as the complete body. A simple baseline denotes 'earth', below, just as 'sky' is defined by the line above.

In Chinese thought, the form of our earth is brought to maturity by man, through the creation of cities. And so, by adding 'grown up' to the character for 'earth', we have 'city': the earth, in its natural completeness, developed by man.
