Through the traditions of various cultures we can learn different ways of coping with the homecoming from war. On Veterans day, Memorial Day, and July 4th, we have parades and speeches at war memorials, cemeteries, and in city parks.
A lot of our freeways also say "Veterans Memorial Highway." A rest stop informational sign may tell us about those who in the area went to war, who didn't come back.
How do we honor the living?
Native Americans have Veterans Powwows especially for veterans, where they are honored by the community.
Rolling Thunder, a group of veterans and bikers, meets every year on the Saturday before Memorial Day in Washington DC. Together, they ride over the Potamac River in numbers of thousands.
Often times we only remember those who have served who have passed away. This is changing. In Washington DC, for example, funds are being raised to honor disabled American Veterans. More articles are being published concerning soldiers returning from war. What can we do, as individuals, and as a community? | |
